Every counseling season, the same question comes up: chase the newer, trendier branch, or stick with
a core one at a better college? There's no single right answer, but there is a better way to think
about it.
What "emerging branch" actually means
Branches like AI & Data Science, Robotics, and VLSI are newer additions at most institutes, meaning
smaller batch sizes and less alumni history to judge outcomes from. Core branches like Mechanical and
Electrical have decades of track record, but also more graduates competing in the same lanes.
Questions to ask before you rank a branch high
Does the college actually have dedicated faculty and labs for this branch, or is it a renamed CSE
offering with a new label?
What's the branch's closing rank trend over the last few years, rising, falling, or stable?
Would you rather bet on a newer specialization at a mid-tier college, or a proven core branch at a
stronger institute?
A simple way to decide
If two options are close in rank, prioritize the institute's overall reputation and placement
ecosystem over the branch label. Branch matters more when the ranks are far apart and you're
choosing between a strong branch at a weaker college or a weaker branch at a stronger one.
